Assignment 3C
The moving image text that I have created is a new and creative piece
that builds upon the proven success that many existing texts have had. The
original product that we have tried to base our success upon was 'Educating
Essex' and other such programs, in order to do this we had to have a program
that has a similar format to them but is different in a way that make the
product fresh and new for the audiences who have chosen to watch our program.
The originals were cameras within a school that observe the everyday life of
the many students within the school, so we had to make our product similar
(with cameras in classrooms to observe) and use the formula that has worked
many times beforehand. Our product 'Educating West Berkshire' follows a number
of students as they go through the school year and the problems that they will
encounter throughout. The characters would have to be different to one another
to make their interactions more interesting and suspenseful, this is so the
audience will not know what will happen next to each individual character. The
interview sections of the program played a big part as they can give a helpful
insight into the school life and the stress it can bring to the students. Our
moving image text builds upon the success of the others in the series by
keeping with a similar target audience, 12-18 year old, as they are the ages
that people enter secondary school and it will be insightful to see what life
is like for other people as they travel throughout secondary school. Another
way that our product continues to build upon the success is the use of the same
channel and having a similar broadcast time, Channel 4 at 20:00pm, and this
time will suit teenagers as at this time they will have time to themselves
where they can relax and watch TV. The creative inputs that we have put
into our product means that our product has changed the original to the better
and it is now an improved version as we have gotten rid of the sections in the
original that weren't as popular with the audiences.
The original plan was to create a show that was a spin - off of the channel 4 show 'Educating Essex'. Our show is called 'Educating West Berkshire' and will have cameras inside the school and follow a select few students and this will be used to see everyday life inside a school. Like with 'Educating Essex' the show will be shown at 20:00pm on channel 4. With the time being the same it means that fans of the old show can watch it when they used to, so this familiarity means that they will already enjoy our product before they have actually watching it. This time was used to make sure that that it suited our target audience of 12-18 years old. The program was meant to showcase a different school so that the teenagers who watch it can see how their school differs from the one that is being shown. The comedy in the program will be used in order to make teenagers laugh and it could not make sense to other people who are not within our target audience. The proven success of the past programs means that it is proven that audiences do enjoy it and therefore based on the previous popularity, our moving image will be a proven success. Using online streaming means that our product can get to a greater audience, from those who perhaps do not watch as much TV. It has not changed as much as I expected, and this is mainly due to our product being a spin-off show which meant that we had to continue a variety of traits from the original show. The main difference is that some of the characters are different are that they have been completely removed or that they have been changed in order to create a more diverse group of individuals who are very different from one another in order to make their interactions more entertaining for our audience demographic.
The way that I have helped contribute to my groups planning and
production was by creating ideas for our digital media product, my ideas were very different from our final chosen product. After we had chosen what our moving image text would be we had to begin to plan it otherwise it would have not worked when it came to the production stage of the development process. I helped work out which locations we will have to use, and the costs that come with using them as well as solving any issues that will occur due to the legal, moral and ethical issues that could arise during either the production or exhibition stages of the development. In the production stage I contributed to the group by starring in different sections of the film. I also contributed with the production of our product by filming a variety of sections that are present in the final trailer.
The main areas that went well in the pre-production are the planning
aspects before we decided on a set project, Educating West Berkshire, and we
did create many good ideas that would be very good digital moving texts. The
planning part was very strong because we had a lot of strong ideas. Due to this
we knew we would have to make a hard choice on what to do for our final product
and this would make us work harder at the chosen product in order to justify
our decision for choosing it. One of the strengths of the production stage was
the way we managed to film our creation efficiently and this meant that we
could go over the footage and work out whether we wished to do any re shoots and
this meant that we could make sure our film was at the best possible standard. During
the post-production stage we had to edit our product into a 30 second trailer.
The trailer would have to look professional, so we would have to go through all
of our filmed sections and workout which one was the best to use. There were
many good shots that we have had to choose from and this meant that we had to
make that we chose the best one in order to make it look more polished and professional
looking.
The areas for improvement are we could have possibly done a couple of
scenes again as they do not seem as professional as perhaps we would have liked
them to be, so therefore it would be good to re-film a few sections of the
product before we entered the post-production stage and began to edit it
together into the final trailer. Another area for improvement would be to make the shots more professional looking and be in better quality. This would be done by having a better camera to use when it comes the post-production side of the product, due to this it meant that the final product after the post-production stage maybe wasn't as polished as I wished it to be. For the pre-production element of my digital moving text we could have looked at each part of this stage and carefully plan how we would do things. In my opinion we perhaps rushed through certain sections with possibly not enough in depth development of it in order to go as smoothly as we wanted it to go later on.
