BTEC Creative Digital Media Production

Assignment 3C

The moving image text that I have created is a new and creative piece that builds upon the proven success that many existing texts have had. The original product that we have tried to base our success upon was 'Educating Essex' and other such programs, in order to do this we had to have a program that has a similar format to them but is different in a way that make the product fresh and new for the audiences who have chosen to watch our program. The originals were cameras within a school that observe the everyday life of the many students within the school, so we had to make our product similar (with cameras in classrooms to observe) and use the formula that has worked many times beforehand. Our product 'Educating West Berkshire' follows a number of students as they go through the school year and the problems that they will encounter throughout. The characters would have to be different to one another to make their interactions more interesting and suspenseful, this is so the audience will not know what will happen next to each individual character. The interview sections of the program played a big part as they can give a helpful insight into the school life and the stress it can bring to the students. Our moving image text builds upon the success of the others in the series by keeping with a similar target audience, 12-18 year old, as they are the ages that people enter secondary school and it will be insightful to see what life is like for other people as they travel throughout secondary school. Another way that our product continues to build upon the success is the use of the same channel and having a similar broadcast time, Channel 4 at 20:00pm, and this time will suit teenagers as at this time they will have time to themselves where they can relax and watch TV.  The creative inputs that we have put into our product means that our product has changed the original to the better and it is now an improved version as we have gotten rid of the sections in the original that weren't as popular with the audiences.

The original plan was to create a show that was a spin - off of the channel 4 show 'Educating Essex'. Our show is called 'Educating West Berkshire' and will have cameras inside the school and follow a select few students and this will be used to see everyday life inside a school. Like with 'Educating Essex' the show will be shown at 20:00pm on channel 4. With the time being the same it means that fans of the old show can watch it when they used to, so this familiarity means that they will already enjoy our product before they have actually watching it. This time was used to make sure that that it suited our target audience of 12-18 years old. The program was meant to showcase a different school so that the teenagers who watch it can see how their school differs from the one that is being shown. The comedy in the program will be used in order to make teenagers laugh and it could not make sense to other people who are not within our target audience. The proven success of the past programs means that it is proven that audiences do enjoy it and therefore based on the previous popularity, our moving image will be a proven success. Using online streaming means that our product can get to a greater audience, from those who perhaps do not watch as much TV. It has not changed as much as I expected, and this is mainly due to our product being a spin-off show which meant that we had to continue a variety of traits from the original show. The main difference is that some of the characters are different are that they have been completely removed or that they have been changed in order to create a more diverse group of individuals who are very different from one another in order to make their interactions more entertaining for our audience demographic.

The way that I have helped contribute to my groups planning and production was by creating ideas for our digital media product, my ideas were very different from our final chosen product. After we had chosen what our moving image text would be we had to begin to plan it otherwise it would have not worked when it came to the production stage of the development process. I helped work out which locations we will have to use, and the costs that come with using them as well as solving any issues that will occur due to the legal, moral and ethical issues that could arise during either the production or exhibition stages of the development. In the production stage I contributed to the group by starring in different sections of the film. I also contributed with the production of our product by filming a variety of sections that are present in the final trailer.

The main areas that went well in the pre-production are the planning aspects before we decided on a set project, Educating West Berkshire, and we did create many good ideas that would be very good digital moving texts. The planning part was very strong because we had a lot of strong ideas. Due to this we knew we would have to make a hard choice on what to do for our final product and this would make us work harder at the chosen product in order to justify our decision for choosing it. One of the strengths of the production stage was the way we managed to film our creation efficiently and this meant that we could go over the footage and work out whether we wished to do any re shoots and this meant that we could make sure our film was at the best possible standard. During the post-production stage we had to edit our product into a 30 second trailer. The trailer would have to look professional, so we would have to go through all of our filmed sections and workout which one was the best to use. There were many good shots that we have had to choose from and this meant that we had to make that we chose the best one in order to make it look more polished and professional looking.

The areas for improvement are we could have possibly done a couple of scenes again as they do not seem as professional as perhaps we would have liked them to be, so therefore it would be good to re-film a few sections of the product before we entered the post-production stage and began to edit it together into the final trailer. Another area for improvement would be to make the shots more professional looking and be in better quality. This would be done by having a better camera to use when it comes the post-production side of the product, due to this it meant that the final product after the post-production stage maybe wasn't as polished as I wished it to be. For the pre-production element of my digital moving text we could have looked at each part of this stage and carefully plan how we would do things. In my opinion we perhaps rushed through certain sections with possibly not enough in depth development of it in order to go as smoothly as we wanted it to go later on.

Logo

The first establishing shot is used to set the scene for the audience and to get a feel for the city that you are meant to protect.
The crane shot and the medium shot afterwards show people, running away in terror. This also has the ominous voice of scarecrow to give the trailer a bit of horror.
Tilt, OTS and close up are used to give the audience a sense of loneliness as they see him alone in the cave getting ready to save Gotham.
The trailer also has tracking, pan and OTS was used in order to show how the dire the situation is for the police as they tirelessly try to defend their city.
The trailer switches back to Batman who is still reading the letter that his father gave him, alone.
We see an iconic villain for Batman and the Arkhamverse who is fighting with police and there is a quick cut between the characters in order to show the excitement of the battle that has begun.
The trailer then cuts back to Bat beginning to suit up. A pan is used to show the floor opening – which reviles the Batmobile.
Following this there are extreme close ups on Bat as parts of his armor lock into place. The close ups are to show how militaristic it is.
Following this there are closer ups and pans of the many villains that feature in this game.
It goes back to many extreme close ups of the Batmobile followed by an extreme close up on the mask going onto his face.
After more villains there is an establishing shot, long shot and a tracking shot of the Batmobile leaving the lake and getting ready to fight in Gotham.

Editing

Sound effects are enhanced
Quick shots between characters and during fights.
Explosions
Slow motion
From the trailer you can see that that many of the shots have quick cuts between them to make the trailer quick and action packed and give the audience a sense of excitement
Sound
Voice overs – Scarecrow and Thomas Wayne.
Music – Dramatic
Sound effects – Cars, gunshots, explosions, groans,

The Scarecrow voice over is ominous as it talks about releasing fear onto the city. The Thomas Wayne voice – over continues through the rest of the trailer and what he is saying is amusing for the audience. This is because that he is saying not to do all of those things (like fast cars) as they wouldn’t help the people of Gotham, but actually he has all of these things in order to help the people of Gotham.
The music in the trailer is very quiet and difficult to hear but when you do hear it, it is very soothing but quite dramatic to compliment the hectic action scenes on screen.
The sound effects are used to increase the feel of the trailer and add a sense of realism to the trailer.

Mise-en-scene
Costumes – Rioters uniform, police uniform, Bat suit. Most suits dirty
Props – Guns, cars,
Setting – Rich mansion (exterior), streets (crowded and dirty), cave
Lighting – Dark, gloomy

The audience gets the feeling that Gotham is at war – adds tension as they don’t know who will survive this. The dirty costumes fit the dirty streets with litter everywhere. Some of the characters costumes are burnt which ties in with the burning fires in the background and the logo which is on fire.

During the very first shots of the trailer there are establishing shots of the city, which zooms in onto the bridge with helicopters circling above. In this scene there is a voice-over done by the character, Scarecrow, who with the use of editing is made to sound sound menacing and add suspense to the trailer as you don't know what will happen in the game, combine this with the images of a family running away in fear - with the litter flying everywhere create the sense that these families are in danger and that it is your job to keep them safe and protect them from Scarecrow. The other voice over is Bruce Wayne's dad and his will. This is very ironic as everything that he is saying not to do, Bruce is doing in order to help the people of Gotham and his father even tells him not to let the city get run by chaos and so he tries to help by suiting up to save people.

Arrow:

Arrow Season 1 Trailer

Arrow is a television series that airs on SKY 1 on Wednesdays. The program is on its fourth season but I will be assessing its very first episode of season 1. On October 10th 2012 the very first episode was aired and it was called 'Pilot'. Arrow is based off the comics 'Green Arrow' published by DC comics.

Target Audience -

The target audience for Arrow would be teenagers and fans of the comics. For the teenagers it has the action and adventure that would excite many.

In Arrow there isn't a message to each episode and this also shows as there is one general story that goes through the entire series. Due to this the show is very good at making you watch in a batch as they end most episodes with cliff hangers and this means that having a message in each individual episode would be very difficult to implement.

Story - The story that surrounds the first episode (and the continuation of the first season) is that after 5 years on a deserted island, billionaire Oliver Queen comes home after being saved. As he tries to rejoin society, his best friend Tommy and him are abducted by a group of men interested in knowing what Oliver's dad told him before he died. The pair escape as Oliver kills the captures while Tommy is unconscious. Oliver's mother, Moira, orders Oliver to have a bodyguard with him at all times in response to the kidnapping.
Oliver quickly sneaks away from his new bodyguard, John Diggle, and begins to make his lair underneath an abandoned warehouse. This is where the story begins to take place.

Characters -

The characters in the pilot episode were brought in to introduce the characters, their motives and to add suspicion about certain characters, which does come into play later on in the series.
Oliver Queen is played by Stephen Amell and was one of the first actors to audition for the role. For him the appeal of portraying Oliver Queen was that he saw multiple roles that were tied to the same characters. He said that the roles were: 'The casual playboy', 'The wounded hero', 'The brooding Hamlet', ' The lover', and 'The man of action'.
John Diggle is played by David Ramsey. He plays Oliver's bodyguard and later close friend who aids him in his vigilante life style. The character had never been in the comics and the actor later said that it allowed him to 'just kind of take [his character], and run with it'
Laurel Lance is played by Katie Cassidy. The character in the comics is the vigilante Black Canary. The actress said that she wanted to be a part of the show due to the development team behind it. The character is Oliver's ex - girlfriend who he cheated on before he was stranded on the deserted island.
Detective Quentin Lance is the detective in the police force and is the father of Laurel and Sara.

BBC Three 60 second news:

The BBC Three 60 second news is a quick way to get the news across without having to have an entire program. It makes the news more interesting to people who may not want too watch an entire news program.
Unlike
BBC Threes target audience is focused on a young audience (16-34 on the official website). From the official BBC Three website it stats that:

  • The channel is disciplined in its focus on young audiences and 16-34 years-old are its centre of gravity: people who are young in spirit and mindset.
  • BBC Three is 'never afraid to try new things' and will continue to innovate with breakthrough Comedy, stand-out Entertainment, brave Documentary and intelligent Factual Formats.
This shows that BBC Three wishes to be original and be a channel for young people. They also would like young people to watch the news so they decided to have it as a short segment between programs so that the young people watching it would get the information that they need to know.

Batman Arkham Knight:

Official Batman Arkham Knight Announcement Trailer

The Arkham Knight trailer is the announcement trailer for the last game in the Batman: Arkham series. The series has had 4 games (including Arkham Knight) and this announcement came on the 4th of March 2014. The last game had come on 18th October 2011,  Batman: Arkham City.

Target Audience -
The target audience for the game would be fans of the previous games and new comers who hadn't played the previous games but had just heard about them. The main gender for this product is males aged 15 - 30 and would also include fans of Batman and the series.

The promotional video for the product doesn't show the product at all because at this point development hadn't began and this meant that the developers couldn't show the actual product. In later trailers they showed game play to show the audience what the game was like.

The trailer uses a logo which continues through all of the trailers and into the actual game. This meant that people could know what product they were looking at when the caught glimpses of the poster and advertisement. In the trailer there isn't a lot of information apart from the name of the product and some of the characters that will be in the game. Along with this it includes a release date (which was later moved twice due to development time) and a piece of downloadable content that is included with the game.

The trailer creates excitement about the game as at this point it had been 3 years since the last game (there was a game since then but it was made by a different developer and wasn't as good) so when the game was announced it meant that people were really excited for it.
